Samuel F. Smith was a Baptist minister, journalist and author, who is best known for having written the lyrics to "My Country, 'Tis of Thee", which he entitled "America". He wrote the song, which many consider the unofficial national anthem of the United States, in 1831, and it was first performed in public on July 4 of that year at a children's Independence Day celebration in Boston. It was first published in 1832, and Smith always dated the song from its publication date.
Autograph Manuscript Signed, in or near Boston, Mass., 1880, being the first and by far the most famous stanza of the song, signed by him and dated in his hand, "S.F. Smith 1832-1880":
My country, 'tis of thee,
Sweet land of liberty,
Of thee I sing;
Land where my fathers died,
Land of the pilgrims' pride,
From every mountainside
Let freedom ring!
