Union general whose decisive victory at the Battle of Pea Ridge on March 7 and 8, 1862, against a superior Confederate force, secured Missouri for the Union and forever destroyed southern hopes in the far western theater. Gen. Franz Sigel served under him at that battle and made notable contributions to the Union success. Both were rewarded with promotions from brigadier to major general on March 22, and received word a few days later.
Autograph Letter Signed, 1 page 4to, Headquarters, Army of the South West, March 25, 1862, to Sigel. “General, I am glad to see your confirmation also and in reciprocating complements for the first time take the liberty of subscribing myself yours very truly, Saml. R. Curtis, Major Gen.”
Curtis here savors his promotion, writing, as he himself states, his first letter as major general.
