From 1967-1975, Reagan was governor of California. He supported the War in Vietnam being waged at that time, and when many recently returned veterans were re-integrating themselves back home, he was active in providing a framework for them. He also sought to honor their service in an unpopular war. As an architect of conservative thought, Reagan, like Goldwater, believed that freedom was the greatest asset of the United States, issuing his four “Pillars of Freedom” at the start of his presidency: individual liberty, economic opportunity, global democracy, national pride. All these four relied on freedom, without with democracy could not exist, he explained. This letter demonstrates use of this terminology and ideology earlier in his political career.
Typed Letter Signed, Sacramento, January 15, 1971, to Staff Serg. Jerry Kelly in Vietnam. “I am very pleased to send you this California state flag – not only because it will be a symbol of our Golden State so many miles from home, but also your request demonstrates your pride in California…Because of the great many requests we receive from military personnel for California, and our inability to provide them, the California Federation of Republican Women has generously volunteered to make them available. May this California state flag serve as a reminder to you of our humble appreciation for your devotion to duty and dedication to the safeguarding of freedom, without which we here at home could not enjoy peace of mind or the blessings of security. I know you will fly this flag proudly.”
Included is a statement from Kelly signed in type, confirming the circumstances of the letter. “During my second tour in Vietnam in 1970, I managed a military club for a while. For the benefit of the soldiers, I decided to decorate the club using replicas of state flags…My letter to California was referred to the governor’s ofice. The Governor Reagan sent me this letter in reference to the flag which I later received from the California Federation of Republican Women…”
