Robert E. Lee was a prodigy at West Point, graduating second in the class of 1829. While at the military academy, he was one of just two students in the history of the Military Academy never to receive a demerit. During the Mexican War, Lee earned more accolades than any non-general officer, and became a personal favorite of Gen. Winfield Scott. Eyes were on him, and when in 1852 an opening came up for the coveted post of Superintendent of the Military Academy, Lee got the nob and returned to West Point. In July 1853, Lee experienced a spiritual awakening and was confirmed at Christ Church. This was a turning point for him.
West Point is just up the Hudson River from New York, and Lee had apparently developed a banking relationship with City Bank of New York, now Citibank. His need for immediate funds was in New York. Autograph document signed, West Point, NY, November 30, 1853, being a check payable to himself, asking his Virginia bank to send funds to his New York bank. "Branch, Farmers Bank of Virginia – Alexandria. Sir, Pay by draft on the City of New York to my order Five hundred nineteen and 96/100 Dollars." Most checks signed by Lee are printed forms, and this autograph check, completely in his hand, is quite uncommon.
