About Collecting Andrew Johnson Autographs
Andrew Johnson did not enjoy writing letters and those of any period of his life are scarce. Very few of the letters that do exist have good content or contain revealing information, making it difficult to understand him through his writings. The few gems in his correspondence seem to be dated after his presidency.
Lincoln was a tough act to follow, all the more so in light of his murder at the moment of triumph. Johnson had to bring the country through Reconstruction, with both the returning southerners and radical northerners pulling him in different directions.
