Just After First Taking Office in 1981, Reagan Writes: “While the opposition groups and re-groups, I’m enjoying the battle”

Ronald Reagan was first inaugurated on January 20, 1981. It was the ascent of the Conservative movement.

Douglas Morrow was a Hollywood screenwriter and film producer. He earned an Academy Award for his script for 1949’s The Stratton Story, a biography of Baseball player Monty Stratton, who was disabled in a hunting accident. Reagan, who catapulted to fame as an actor, became friends with Morrow when Morrow sought to cast him in that part, remained friends throughout the Hollywood days and kept in contact through most of his presidency. Morrow was a part of the civilians in space program, and hoped to go into space himself. He wrote his friend President Reagan about it.

Just a month after inauguration, Reagan gives insight into his state of mind in this letter to his close friend.

Typed letter signed, the White House, February 26, 1981, to Morrow, signed “Ron.” “Dear Doug, It was good to get your note. Knowing your love for bureaucracy, I was afraid you might have turned against me (that’s a joke). We’re hard at it and while the opposition groups and re-groups, I’m enjoying the battle. Thanks for your encouragement and best regards.”
