A four-language ship’s paper issued to “Nathaniel Cheever, master or commander of the schooner called The Betsy of the burthen of 100 tons or thereabouts lying at present in the Port of Salem bound for Tangiers or market and laden with tobacco, beef, pepper, coffee, cocoa, rum, flour.” It is dated Salem the 27th day of June 1811, and signed James Madison as President and countersigned Robert Smith as Secretary of State. There is a large presidential paper and wax seal at left and Salem, Massachusetts notary public stamp lower left with embossed seal. Attached to a board. Some chipping at edges. Signatures strong.
