Autograph letter signed, Mentor, Ohion, September 22, 1878 or 80, to Ohio businessman Henry Sherwin, co-founder of the Sherwin Williams Co. “Dear Sherwin, I have just received the enclosed [not present] which I think should be looked after. It may be worthwhile to keep these young men together by a little encouragement. Please look after them carefully.” We obtained this directly from the Sherwin descendants. The piece is affixed to a light card at the top of the letter on the verso.
Though it is not known what the specific encouragement related to, the spirit of the letter shows us much about Garfield.
