Alexandra Feodorovna, born Princess Charlotte of Prussia was Empress consort of Russia. She was the wife of Tsar Nicholas I, and mother of Tsar Alexander II. She died November 1, 1860, and her son Tsar Alexander II officially notified foreign governments of the event. Buchanan had been U.S. minister to Russia from 1831-1833, and in 1832 he negotiated a commerce treaty with Russia. At that time, Tsar Nicholas I was on the throne, and Alexandra Feodorovna was Empress. Buchanan was acquainted with the royal family in that connection.
