Independence, Missouri, home of Harry Truman, held a storied past that charmed Thomas Hart Benton, an American artist and fellow Missourian. When President Truman confronted him with the idea of painting a mural in the Truman Library, Benton immediately began to conceptualize an idea for "Independence and the Opening of the West" that would focus on the city’s history. After some bantering with Truman over who and what should be depicted, it was decided to focus on three decades, 1817 to 1847, with the mural painting a conceptual view of the founding of Independence. After completion in 1961 the Truman Library published a booklet describing the painting and the story it tells, and including a color fold-out of the mural.

We offer one of these booklets, inscribed and signed “To William Jewell Cary III from Harry S. Truman, 2/21/64.”
