Typed Letter Signed on his letterhead, February 27, 1958, to Felton M. Johnston, Secretary of the U.S. Senate. “You do not know how very much I appreciated your kindness to me in Washington. I felt just as I did when I was a United States Senator and used that office of yours as a sort of educational center. The story you told was one of the best I have ever heard. I hope I will receive the same invitation every time I come to Washington, because the years I spent in the Senate were the happiest ones of my life.” Truman provides an interesting perspective that tells you something about the job of being chief executive. He was not alone among presidents in preferring other lines of work. For example, Taft preferred being a judge to president.
