The First Continental Congress convened in Philadelphia’s Carpenters Hall on September 5, 1774. It sought rather to right the wrongs that had been inflicted on the colonies by the mother country and hoped that a unified voice would gain a hearing in London. Although it did not advocate independence, it proved to be the first step towards that goal.

On September 6, 1974, the bicentennial of that meeting, a dinner was held in Philadelpia entitled “Reconvening the First Continental Congress”. President Gerald R. Ford delivered the main address, and many other notables attended, including Pennsylvania Governor Milton Shapp.

Governor Shapp’s copy of the program, inscribed and signed on the cover “To the Governor, best wishes, Jerry Ford.” Obtained directly from the Shapp family.
