After the Republicans nominated Garfield for president in 1880, they offered Arthur the vice-presidency, hoping that he would help carry New York in the election. In the campaign he raised funds by assessing officeholders and personally oversaw the successful Republican canvass of the state.

After the Republicans nominated Garfield for president in 1880, they offered Arthur the vice-presidency, hoping that he would help carry New York in the election. In the campaign he raised funds by assessing officeholders and personally oversaw the successful Republican canvass of the state.
Letter Signed, New York, November 8, 1880, in the wake of the victorious election, to George Hillier, whom he addresses informally as “My Dear Hillier”. "Pardon my delay in acknowledging your kind letter of October 30th enclosing a generous contribution of $50 in addition to the $60 you had already sent to this committee. This is characteristic of you and if I find that it is not especially needed, as now seems probable, I shall have the amount sent back to you."
He signs himself “Your faithful and fast friend”, a particularly intimate closing. An uncommon letter of Arthur from the month he was elected vice president.
