SOLD Calvin Coolidge Promises Good Government and Protection of Rights

"I want to co-operate with you at all times in your effort to secure good government for our Commonwealth and the protection of American rights and American industries for our Nation.”.

After serving as the popular mayor of Northampton, Mass., in 1911 Coolidge was sent to the state Senate, where he became a Republican leader. After his election to a third term in 1913, he rounded up sufficient support for election to the presidency of the Senate. In this powerful position he was the most important Republican officeholder in Massachusetts, because Democrats occupied both the governorship and the lieutenant governorship.

Advising his colleagues to "Do the day’s work" and "Be brief," Coolidge performed effectively as Senate president, producing legislation that was sound and well received. In 1915 he ran successfully for lieutenant governor, and was reelected the following year. Coolidge used his three years as lieutenant governor to acquire greater knowledge of government, and it proved a major stepping-stone in his career, as in 1918 he was elected governor.

Typed Letter Signed on “Calvin Coolidge for Lieutenant-Governor” letterhead, one page 4to, November 14th, 1916, to Republican politico Jay R. Benton, who would serve as Massachusetts state attorney general while Coolidge was president. In it, he gives a thorough statement of his political beliefs, which he would take all the way to the White House and then effectively implement. "We have kept Massachusetts in the Republican column. This result is due to the work of such men as you. I want to thank you for it. Also I want you to know how much I appreciate the support you gave me which re-elected me Lieutenant-Governor by from 60,000 to 75,000 plurality. Will you not extend my thanks to each member of your committee and remember that I want to co-operate with you at all times in your effort to secure good government for our Commonwealth and the protection of American rights and American industries for our Nation?”

The number and variety of Coolidge’s accomplishments as president were substantial. He provided honest, fiscally conservative government, supported tariffs to aid American industries, reduced debt and stood up for American interests in dealings with foreign countries, just as promised in this letter.
