The Raab Collection is pleased to announce its next Guest Curator: Tom McMillan, historian and author of the new book, The Year That Made America: From Rebellion to Independence, 1775-1776, which recounts the intense political battle that led to the Declaration of Independence.
In addition to The Year That Made America, McMillan is the author of two books on the Battle of Gettysburg and one each on September 11 and the Star-Spangled Banner. He recently retired after a 43-year career in sports media and marketing, including 25 years as VP/Communications for the Pittsburgh Penguins of the National Hockey League. Now he spends his time studying and writing about his true passion: history.
McMillan has served on the board of trustees of Pittsburgh’s Heinz History Center, on the board of directors of the Friends of Flight 93 National Memorial, on the marketing committee of the Gettysburg Foundation, and as a tour guide at the Civil War room at Carnegie Library in Carnegie, Pennsylvania. McMillan currently serves as co-host of the “Antietam and Beyond” podcast and is a facilitator of the Adams County Historical Society’s battlefield leadership program in Gettysburg.
About the Guest Curators Program at Raab
The Raab Collection invites prominent authors, historians, and leaders to curate a virtual exhibition of documents that stand out as personally inspiring or reflect their scholarly interests. Raab relaunched its Guest Curators program in 2024 in celebration of its 35th anniversary as dealers of important historical documents and autographs. Several times a year, Raab invites authors, historians, and thought leaders to choose a selection of documents currently for sale with The Raab Collection and create a themed ‘exhibit’ with commentary by the Guest Curator. They share their experience and expertise, motivations and passions, bringing history to life in ways only they can. Previous Guest Curators have included Talmage Boston, author of How the Best Did It: Leadership Lessons From Our Top Presidents; Stewart McLaurin, president of the White House Historical Association; and Edward F. O’Keefe, CEO of the Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library Foundation.
At Raab, we are often on the front line of historical discovery. Many of the pieces we sell are unpublished or were acquired directly from the descendants or heirs of historical figures and collectors, often unseen by the general public or the research community before. This offers each Guest Curator robust and interesting material to highlight.
The exhibit curated by Tom McMillan will debut on the Raab website later this month.
