Document Signed as President, complete with engravings of an eagle and military accoutrements, Washington, March 7, 1891, naming Jacob F. Kreps a first lieutenant in the Infantry. The document is countersigned by Secretary of War Redfield Proctor and its blue seal is still intact. A West Point graduate, Kreps became a noted diarist; his "Combat Diary: Episodes from the History of the Twenty-Second Regiment, 1866-1905" remains in print and is a primary source for the experiences of U.S. soldiers in the Spanish-American War. In that war, Kreps rose to captain; he would eventually become a colonel.
