Stafford was selected among the second group of astronauts. In December, 1965, he piloted Gemini VI, which made the first rendezvous in space. Six months later he commanded Gemini IX and performed a demonstration of an early rendezvous that would be used in Apollo. Stafford was then assigned to the Apollo program and commanded Apollo 10 in May, 1969, making the first flight of the lunar module to the moon, and performed the entire lunar mission except the actual landing. He logged his fourth space flight as commander of the Apollo-Soyuz mission.
Typed Letter Signed on his personal air force general’s letterhead, one page 4to, no place but likely Houston, Texas, March, 1973, to Hal Collins. “The conclusion of the Apollo Program marked one of the great eras in man’s exploration of the unknown. This Program with its comprehensive exploration in a short period of time has never been equaled previously in history and may not be equaled for several centuries in the future. Your untiring devotion to duty and support as Head of the Mission Support Office certainly enhanced the crew’s capability to train for the mission and not have to worry about the many tedious details which you so superbly handled. We all wish you the best of success and health upon your retirement from NASA and want you to know of the many great friends you have made on the Program.”
A very important statement about the unique place of the space program, with a prediction that would have appeared pessimistic then but seems prescient now that the space program of the 1960’s and early 1970’s may stand unequaled for the forseeable time to come.
